One Person Supplying More

In matters of the heart this card describes an arrangement in which one party is currently providing considerably more than the other. Not through anybody's unfairness but through circumstances: one person is in difficulty, one has capacity, and the arrangement has adjusted accordingly. Nothing about that adjustment was negotiated. Something about it establishes a structure neither person designed and both are now living inside. Both are now living inside a structure neither designed. Nobody drew it up. Something adjusted by circumstances rather than by unfairness produces the whole arrangement. Nothing about the adjustment was negotiated. Something given carries a structure nobody negotiated. Nobody holds the measure except the giver.

The Measure Is Held by One Party

He holds the scales and drops the coins, and applied to a relationship that names something rarely stated: whoever is supplying more is also determining how much, and there is no independent instrument anywhere. Nothing about the amount gets negotiated between equals. Something about that arrangement is what a period of unevenness actually involves, and describing it accurately is considerably more useful than pretending it is symmetrical. Describing it accurately is considerably more useful than pretending it is symmetrical. Nobody describes it. Something with no independent instrument anywhere leaves the measure in one hand. Nothing about the amount gets negotiated between equals. The generosity and the imbalance are both real. Nothing about a single transfer establishes an arrangement. Somebody has to state the terms.

The Giving Is Real

This card gets read cynically and the reading is incomplete. Something genuine is being supplied, the person receiving it genuinely needs it, and the arrangement is materially better for them than the alternative. Nothing about the imbalance makes the care false. Something about both facts holding simultaneously is the honest version, and choosing one produces either sentimentality or suspicion and neither describes what is happening. Choosing one produces either sentimentality or suspicion and neither describes what is happening. Nobody holds both. Something genuine is being supplied to somebody who genuinely needs it. Nothing about the imbalance makes the care false. Something given carries a structure nobody negotiated. Nobody holds the measure except the giver.

What Being Supported Costs

The most useful thing this card contains is a description of the receiving position, which almost nothing written about relationships addresses. Being provided for establishes something that continues after any particular instance, and it is not a posture anybody chooses. Nothing about the material improvement removes it. Something about it is why people in relationships decline help that would have worked, and it is almost never pride. It is almost never pride, whatever it looks like. Nobody makes the correct reading. Something establishing a continuing position comes attached to every instance. Nothing about the material improvement removes it. The generosity and the imbalance are both real. Nothing about a single transfer establishes an arrangement.

Nobody Is Depicted Afterwards

The image shows a moment and nothing following it. What this arrangement becomes across two years is entirely absent, and that absence is the actual question. Nothing about a temporary asymmetry establishes anything. Something about it becoming permanent without any decision is what determines whether this was support during a difficulty or the shape a relationship has quietly acquired. It determines whether this was support during a difficulty or the shape a relationship has quietly acquired. Nobody can tell at the time. Something becoming permanent without any decision is the actual question. Nothing about a temporary asymmetry establishes anything. Somebody has to state the terms. Something given carries a structure nobody negotiated.

The Scales Are Level

Whatever else is true, the balance is even, and that detail establishes that the measure is being applied honestly. Nothing about the arrangement is exploitative in any ordinary sense. Something about it is unequal and fair simultaneously, which is a considerably more difficult arrangement to be inside than an unjust one, since there is nothing to object to and something to endure. There is nothing to object to and something to endure. Nobody can raise it. Something unequal and fair simultaneously is harder to occupy than something unjust. Nothing about the arrangement is exploitative. Nobody holds the measure except the giver. The generosity and the imbalance are both real. Nothing about a single transfer establishes an arrangement.

Two Recipients

There are two figures below and the coins go to one. Applied to a relationship that raises something this image leaves unresolved: attention, resources and capacity get distributed by whoever holds them, and the criteria are visible to nobody including frequently the person applying them. Nothing about the decisions is arbitrary. Something about their being unstated means everybody around them constructs an explanation. Everybody around them constructs an explanation for decisions that were never stated. Nobody supplies the actual criteria. Something distributed by whoever holds it operates on invisible grounds. Nothing about the decisions is arbitrary. Somebody has to state the terms. Something given carries a structure nobody negotiated.

Six After Five

The previous card describes two people in the snow, unnoticed by anybody. This one describes what happens when help arrives: it comes with a structure attached that nobody negotiated. Nothing about that structure was imposed deliberately by anybody. Something about it is simply what receiving involves, and a relationship that has been through the previous card is generally living inside this one without having discussed it. Nobody holds the measure except the giver. The generosity and the imbalance are both real. Nothing about a single transfer establishes an arrangement. Somebody has to state the terms. Something given carries a structure nobody negotiated. Nobody holds the measure except the giver.
