Is It Night or Day?

Look at The Moon and try to work out what time it is, because you will not manage it. The sky is pale and the moon is bright, and the light belongs to neither day nor night. A face sits inside the crescent with its eyes closed, and drops of light fall from it onto the landscape below. Two grey towers stand in the middle distance, one on each side, marking a gateway between them. A dog and a wolf face the moon and howl, representing the tame and the wild parts of the same instinct. At the bottom of the card a crayfish is climbing out of a pool of water onto the shore. A pale path runs between the towers and disappears into the hills without showing you where it ends. Everything here is visible and nothing is clear, and that uncertainty is not a fault in the picture, it is the message.

Follow the Path From the Bottom Up

The Moon is best read as a journey through the card, starting at the water. The crayfish crawling out of the pool represents something rising out of the unconscious, old, awkward and not yet fully formed. It reaches the path, which runs forward without ever showing its destination, so it can be followed without revealing the end. On either side stand the dog and the wolf, domesticated instincts and wild ones, both reacting to the same light. Then come the two towers, marking a gateway that must be passed through rather than around. Above them hangs the moon, showing only reflected light rather than a source of its own. The drops falling from it suggest that something is being given even though everything cannot yet be seen clearly. Everything in The Moon is moving upward, from the water to the sky, showing that whatever is surfacing is trying to reach the light.

Your Imagination Is Doing Overtime

The Moon is the card of fears that grow in the dark. In moonlight, ordinary things take on shapes they do not have in daylight, and your mind does exactly the same thing with unfinished information. A short reply becomes evidence that somebody is angry with you. A silence becomes a verdict. A symptom becomes a diagnosis at three in the morning. None of this makes you irrational, it makes you human, because your mind hates gaps and fills them with the worst available option. So when The Moon appears, treat your certainty as suspicious rather than reliable. Write down what you actually know and what you have supplied yourself, keeping the two columns strictly separate. Then check one of the assumptions if you can, because a single fact will do more for you than another hour of thinking.

Something Is Coming Up to the Surface

That crayfish matters, and it is easy to dismiss because it is small and slightly ugly. It represents something rising out of your unconscious into the daylight, and it usually arrives in fragments rather than as a clear insight. You may notice an old feeling turning up in a situation that does not deserve it, or a reaction that seems far too big for what triggered it. Treat that as information rather than as a malfunction. What surfaces at this time is often old, connected to something you learned long before you could think about it. You do not need to force an interpretation, because these things clarify with time and attention rather than with pressure. Talking to someone who listens well will move it faster than analysing it alone. In The Moon the crayfish always slides back into the water if you grab at it, so let it come at its own pace.

Not Everything You Are Told Is True

The Moon also deals with deception, and that includes the everyday kind rather than anything dramatic. Half information, a story told with a piece missing, a version of events shaped to make somebody look better. Under The Moon things are rarely as they are being presented to you, and that includes the versions you are telling yourself. So slow down before you act on anything you have heard second hand. Ask direct questions and notice whether you get direct answers, since evasiveness is usually more informative than content. Watch out for the pressure to decide quickly, because urgency is the standard tool for stopping people from checking. This is not a reason to distrust everybody, it is a reason to verify one or two important things before you commit. In moonlight, waiting for daylight is a legitimate strategy.

Pay Attention to Your Dreams

The Moon rules the part of you that speaks in images rather than sentences. Your dreams get busier during periods like this, and they usually repeat themselves until you notice. Keep something beside your bed and write them down in the first minute of the morning, because they evaporate fast. Do not look up symbols in a dictionary, ask yourself instead what that image reminds you of in your own life. Daydreams count too, along with the scenes that play in your head on a walk or in the shower. Look for repetition rather than meaning, since whatever keeps coming back is the material worth working with. Creative work belongs here as well, because The Moon feeds art, music and writing far better than it feeds spreadsheets. If you have a creative project waiting, this is an unusually good time for it.

The Path Is There, Even Unlit

That pale path between the towers is the most reassuring detail in the card. It exists, it is walkable, and it disappears into the hills without showing you its destination. You are being asked to move without full visibility, which is not the same as moving blindly. Take smaller steps than usual and check your position more often than usual. Postpone anything irreversible if you can, and keep going with everything reversible. Notice that both towers stand on the path rather than blocking it, so the gateway is genuinely open. Periods like this always end, and the light does not arrive all at once, it comes back gradually. The Moon is not asking you to solve anything right now, only to keep walking carefully until you can see again.

What Not to Do While This Lasts

Since The Moon deals with a confusing stretch, it is worth being clear about what makes it worse. Do not make large irreversible decisions while you cannot tell what is real, because you can revisit them in a month. Do not send the message you wrote at two in the morning, and if you must write it, keep it in drafts until daylight. Do not treat your current mood as a reliable report on your life, since it is a report on tonight. Do not chase certainty by interrogating everyone around you, because that usually generates more noise. Do not use alcohol or anything similar to quiet the unease, since it works briefly and reliably makes the following day sharper. Do not decide that you are broken, because this state is temporary and extremely common. What you should do is smaller and duller: sleep properly, eat properly, tell one person, check one fact, and wait for the light.
