The Material Comes Along
Six blades stand in the boat rather than on the shore. That single detail is the honest content of this card and it corrects almost every account of what a transition of this kind involves. Nothing gets left behind. What produced the difficulty travels with the person who is leaving, and the improvement being depicted consists entirely of a change in conditions rather than a change in cargo, which is what actually happens as opposed to what everybody expects to happen. It is what actually happens as opposed to what everybody expects to happen. Nobody corrects the expectation. Something travels with the person leaving. Nothing gets left behind on the shore. Something travels with them rather than being left. Nobody performs their own crossing.
Calmer Rather Than Calm
On the near side the water is choppy and on the far side it is smooth. Nothing about the destination is depicted as peaceful; it is depicted as less difficult than what came before. That distinction is worth holding, since a considerable amount of what gets described in this register as arrival is actually this: the same material carried in conditions that no longer make carrying it the whole of somebody's attention. Being Carried
A ferryman stands at the back and the passengers are not steering. Inwardly that describes something almost nothing in this register acknowledges: a passage of this kind is not performed by the person making it. They are moved, by circumstances, by other people, by a process already underway that they did not begin. Nothing about their effort produces the movement. Something about that is uncomfortable to accept and is the whole mechanism. It is uncomfortable to accept and it is the whole mechanism. Nobody wants it stated. Facing Away
The figures sit huddled with their backs turned and their heads down. Nothing about the posture suggests anticipation or relief. This is honest about the experience: somebody in the middle of a passage of this kind is not contemplating anything, is not extracting meaning from it, and is generally entirely occupied with the water immediately underneath the boat rather than with anything ahead. No Engine
A pole moves a boat gradually and nothing in this card produces speed. That pace is the operative feature rather than incidental. Passages of this kind proceed at a rate nobody finds acceptable, produce no detectable progress on any particular day, and are only visible in retrospect across months. Nothing about that can be accelerated by intention, practice or discipline. Something about expecting otherwise produces the discouragement that occurs midway. Away From Rather Than Toward
This card describes departure considerably more clearly than arrival. The far shore is visible and entirely unspecified, and nobody in the boat appears to know what is on it. That is accurate about most genuine transitions, which do not begin with a destination. Nothing about them starts with a vision of anything. Something about them starts with a situation that stopped being habitable, and the direction gets determined by that alone. The direction gets determined by that alone. Nobody selects a destination first. Something stopped being habitable and produced the movement. Nothing about a vision was ever involved. Nobody performs their own crossing.

Six After Five
This card follows the one where somebody won something at a cost that exceeded it. The sequence is worth reading directly: what comes after a situation that stopped being workable is not insight, repair or resolution. It is leaving. Nothing about the previous condition gets fixed by the movement. Something about it stops being the current one, which is a smaller thing than resolution and considerably more available. What Arrival Actually Consists Of
The most useful correction this card supplies concerns the destination. It is not peace, understanding or a transformed person. Something about the conditions does, and treating that as the whole achievement is what allows anybody to recognise they have arrived. Nothing about the far shore is specified.
