The recognised weakness of zero is not misfortune. It is formlessness: shapeless, lacking definition, missing detail, unorganised. When The Fool appears reversed, you are usually holding a great deal of possibility and none of it will acquire an edge. Nothing has gone wrong and nothing has become anything either, which is a very specific kind of discomfort. You may find yourself unable to describe what you want, not because you want nothing but because the wanting has not yet found an object. Remember that zero sits before conception, before a thing has even become an idea, so what you are waiting for may not be a decision at all. It may be the arrival of the thought itself. Turn the Card Around and Look
The most direct way to read any reversal is to physically turn the card over and watch what happens to the picture, and this one changes completely. The Fool now hangs above the cliff instead of standing at its edge. His posture, which was purposeful and mid-stride, becomes something much closer to falling. The little bundle that sat neatly on his shoulder now dangles beneath him with its opening facing down. The dog that ran at his heel floats above him, out of reach. The sun that lit his road from behind has dropped below him, so the way ahead has lost its light, and the distant mountains now sit overhead where they are unreachable rather than merely far away. Nothing has been added to this image and nothing has been removed. Every single element is still there, arranged so that none of them work. He has not stopped being at the edge. He has stopped being in charge of it.
Everything Falling Out of the Bag
That upside down bundle is the clearest single reading the reversal offers. In the upright card nobody had opened the bag, including him, so his provisions were never inventoried. Reversed, those provisions are leaving without ever having been examined. This is the picture of finding out what you had by watching it go. Nothing dramatic needs to happen for a bag to empty this way; it was simply never closed and nobody was watching it. If something has recently produced an unwelcome surprise, this image shows you where it came from. An inspection did not take place, and that is not dishonesty on anybody's part. Your Instinct Cannot Reach You

Your instinct has not been removed from the picture. It has been disconnected from you. The signal is still sounding somewhere above where you can currently hear it, which is why this position so often describes someone who cannot tell whether their hesitation is genuine perception or simply fear. Those two feel identical in the body and mean opposite things. If you have proceeded against a quiet inner objection, or refused to move because of one you cannot examine, this is the arrangement you are in. Both ends are intact. What has broken is the line between them.
Or You May Be Leaping Too Hard
Every reversal can also be read as too much of the card rather than too little, and zero carries considerable intensity when it runs to excess. In this direction The Fool becomes threshold without crossing: a step taken, abandoned, and taken again somewhere else. Zero added to zero remains zero, which is the numerical way of saying that movement repeated never becomes a quantity. The bundle stays light because nothing is ever gathered, and the road is always the first mile because it never becomes the second. If you have made real attempts and been stopped from the outside every time, the card is describing your conditions rather than your resolve. A blocked beginning and an avoided one look identical from outside and feel completely different from within. Being unable to start is not the same as being unwilling to. Look for the door that is not locked rather than continuing to push at the one that is.
Nothing Has Been Lost
This is the encouraging part, and it is unique to this card. Every other card in the deck changes its numerological value when reversed, because an inverted one behaves as a negative one. Zero is the single exception, because a circle turned upside down is still exactly a circle. Numerologically nothing has changed at all. Your potential is undiminished and it is simply sitting unused. Nothing has been spent by all this standing still, and nothing has been wasted. Zero belongs to the phase before anything has been conceived, and here it is sitting in that phase without moving out of it, which is uncomfortable but not costly. Whatever this reversal is describing for you, whether it is formlessness, a missing piece, a locked door, or too much motion that never lands, you have not lost anything by being here.
